Saint Saviour’s Center
Saint Saviour’s Mission was founded in 1891 as a mission of Christ Church in the factory district of northwest Raleigh. Saint Saviour’s enjoyed financial support from the Vestry and individual Christ Church parishioners for more than fifty years, operating as the church’s principal outreach ministry. In 1937, the Vestry founded Ravenscroft School, a private parochial day school, at Saint Saviour’s. In the late 1940s, Saint Saviour’s was admitted into union with the Diocese as a parish separate from Christ Church, and left the downtown area for new facilities on Six Forks Road. By the mid-1960s, Ravenscroft School had become independent from Christ Church and relocated to a large campus in north Raleigh. The Saint Saviour’s property eventually passed to Raleigh Housing Authority, which used the mission church and rectory as offices through the 1990s.
In 2001, Christ Church renewed its connection to Saint Saviour’s by forming an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, Saint Saviour’s Center, to lease the Saint Saviour’s facilities as an outreach and volunteer coordination center, focusing on service and support of the area’s elderly population as well as other community-oriented outreach. Saint Saviour’s Center’s board members come from Christ Church and other area churches.
A sampling of the programs offered at Saint Saviour’s Center include:
Community Health Initiative - Blue Cross/Blue Shield and White Memorial Presbyterian Church have provided funds to hire a Community Nurse and establish a Health and Wellness Program operating from Saint Saviour's Center with regular site visits at Glenwood Towers, The Carriage House and Capitol Towers.
Meals on Wheels - Operates a Nutrition Center at Saint Saviour's providing a healthy noon meal, Monday through Friday to low-income seniors. Participants gather as early as 10 AM for coffee and conversation, singing, the celebration of birthdays and special events and the occasional celebrity guest. This program is more than a lunch club. It provides a life-line to fellowship and support for those who are too often alone.
English as a Second Language (ESL) - Staff from Wake Technical College teach English and Basic Life-Skills to adults whose first language is not English. A diverse group of approximately 200 individuals, representing many nations and languages, are engaged in this program each year. Citizenship Classes - In partnership with the Lutheran Family Services and the ESL classes, approximately 25 students are coached for their naturalization examination.
Senior Socials - A variety of holiday and theme parties, movie nights and social events are held throughout the year for residents of the Raleigh Housing Authority's Glenwood Towers and The Carriage House. These parties provide seniors with an opportunity to socialize in a festive setting.
