Saint Saviour’s Center

Saint Saviour’s Mission was founded in 1891 as a mission of Christ Church in the factory district of northwest Raleigh. Saint Saviour’s enjoyed financial support from the Vestry and individual Christ Church parishioners for more than fifty years, operating as the church’s principal outreach ministry. In 1937, the Vestry founded Ravenscroft School, a private parochial day school, at Saint Saviour’s. In the late 1940s, Saint Saviour’s was admitted into union with the Diocese as a parish separate from Christ Church, and left the downtown area for new facilities on Six Forks Road. By the mid-1960s, Ravenscroft School had become independent from Christ Church and relocated to a large campus in north Raleigh. The Saint Saviour’s property eventually passed to Raleigh Housing Authority, which used the mission church and rectory as offices through the 1990s.

In 2001, Christ Church renewed its connection to Saint Saviour’s by forming an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, Saint Saviour’s Center, to lease the Saint Saviour’s facilities as an outreach and volunteer coordination center, focusing on service and support of the area’s elderly population as well as other community-oriented outreach. Saint Saviour’s Center’s board members come from Christ Church and other area churches. Volunteers assist with Saint Saviour's programs and other organizations, including:

Community Health and Wellness – A holistic program for senior citizens who reside at Capital Towers, Glenwood Towers and Carriage House apartments. Offerings include healthy living classes, individual counseling by medical professionals, health screenings and outings. Also, volunteers organize seasonal theme parties and activities, such as crafts, book club, Bingo, knitting/crochet, gardening and walking.

Meals on Wheels - Operates a Nutrition Center at Saint Saviour's providing a healthy noon meal to low-income seniors, Monday through Friday. Participants gather as early as 9 AM for coffee and conversation, singing, the celebration of birthdays, special events and the occasional celebrity guest. This program offers fellowship and support for those who are too often alone.

Wake Relief – Provides emergency food for families facing crises, such as loss of employment, illness and financial hardship. Families receive a week’s supply of free groceries.

Community Music School - Teaches private and group lessons to children and teens of low-income families for $1.00 per lesson. Highly qualified music educators and performers teach all instruments to students from kindergarten through high school. Performances are scheduled throughout the year at Saint Saviour’s Center.
