Volunteer Opportunities
Opportunities to Serve within the Parish
WORSHIP
- Lectors Read lessons at worship services.
- Lay Readers Read Morning Prayer in the Chapel during the week.
- Acolytes After receiving acolyte training as part of the 6th grade Sunday School curriculum, youth are eligible to serve as acolytes in regular Sunday and various special worship services.
- Altar Guild Parishioners who prepare the sanctuaries for regular and special worship services and oversee the care of silver vessels, altar linens and vestments.
- Bell Ringing Members of the Ringing Society perform on the five “change ringing” bells on Sundays and at other services, for civic events and in regional and national competitions.
- Ushers Welcome and seat worshipers at services and assist worshipers at the offertory and communion.
- Wedding Committee Directs rehearsals and weddings in the church.
MUSIC
- Adult Choir Men and women who provide choral accompaniment at the 11:00 am Sunday services throughout the year, as well as various festival services. Rehearsals Wednesday evenings. Contact Organist & Choirmaster (919) 834-6259.
- Children’s Choirs Cherub Choir (K-2nd grade), Seraph Choir (3rd-5th grades), and RSCM Choristers (6th-12th grades) offer opportunities for children to learn and enjoy singing. Contact Director of Cherub Choir (834-6259); Seraph and RSCM Choirs (834-6259).
- Instrumentalists Accomplished musicians provide occasional instrumental accompaniment at regular and special worship services. Contact Organist & Choirmaster (834-6259).
CHILDREN & YOUTH
- Nursery 8:45 am-12:30pm on Sundays; available during other special services and events. Contact Assistant Director of Children’s Ministry (834-6259).
- Sunday School Adult volunteers teach children and youth on Sundays from September–May. For 6th-12th grades contact Director of Youth Ministry (834-6259); for nursery–5th grade contact Director of Children’s Ministry (834-6259).
- Vacation Bible School Volunteers Contact Director of Children’s Ministry (834-6259).
- Special Events Volunteers Halloween Carnival, Advent Adventure, Christmas Pageant, etc. Contact Director of Children’s Ministry (834-6259).
FACILITIES
- Brass Cleaning Guild Members clean brass in the chancel.
- Buildings & Grounds Members oversee maintenance and improvement of the church properties and perform special grounds improvements.
EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN
- ECW All female members of the church are members of the ECW, which provides a range of services within and beyond the parish and regular meetings for fellowship, study and prayer.
- Kitchen Guild Members of the parish who prepare and serve meals at various special parish events. Time commitment about 3 hours per month during the day.
- Annual Events Greenery Sale, Spring Fling, Crowing for Christ Church.
- Funeral Guild Provide refreshments following a funeral at the church or a meal following the death of a family member.
- Pastor’s Aide Deliver casseroles to parishioners experiencing illness or other difficulty.
PASTORAL CARE
- Grief Support Caring for and supporting parishioners during the grief process.
- Daughters of The King An order of women in the church dedicated to daily prayer and service.
- Eucharistic Visitors Trained volunteers who deliver communion to the sick or homebound who are unable to attend church services.
- Order of St. Luke the Physician Offers healing prayers following Sunday morning services and visits those needing special prayers.
- Pastoral Visitors Call on parishioners in their homes or places of care to express the love and concern of the church.
- Prayer Shawl Ministry Knit and distribute shawls as a symbol of God’s healing love.
- Stephen Ministry One-on-one confidential ministry through a spiritual friendship for those in crisis—illness, divorce, job loss, death, etc.
- Transportation Ministry Drive seniors to and from church.
- Telecare Ministry Keep in touch by phone with ill or homebound parishioners or their caregivers, assess needs and express the concern of the church.
- Caregiving for Aging Parents & Spouses (CAPS) Provides help to caregivers by linking them to existing resources in the church, community and professionals in the field.
- Flower Arrangements Group Provide and arrange flowers for special events in the parish.
- Flower Delivery Guild Rearrange altar flowers and deliver to hospitalized and homebound parishioners on Sundays after the 11:00 service.
- Library Coordinators Oversee the text and periodical collection of the parish library.
- Office Volunteers Welcome people, answer telephone and assist staff with mailings and other tasks. Contact Program Assistant for Education (834-6259).
- Newcomers Committee Welcome guests to the church and help newcomers find their place in the parish community. Contact Parish Life Coordinator (834-6259).
- Welcome Table Welcome visitors and newcomers on Sundays. Contact Parish Life Coordinator (834-6259).
- Altar Flowers Purchase flowers for the altar for Sunday worship services.
Opportunities to Serve Beyond the Parish
PARISH SERVICE WEEKEND
- A weekend of outreach in the fall that allows members of the parish to participate in community outreach and services. Announcements to sign up are posted on the church web site and in the Sunday announcements.
CHRIST CHURCH OUTREACH MINISTRIES
- CCOM helps coordinate and direct the many outreach efforts of our parish, fostering new opportunities for service.
MISSION TRIP
- Housing construction and other community projects in depressed areas of the country.
HOUSING DEVELOPMENT: HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
- Participants help build affordable housing for the poor in Raleigh.
HOUSING DEVELOPMENT: LOCAL RECONSTRUCTION
- Volunteers do hands-on rehabilitation of local housing units for non-profit groups.
LITERACY TRAINING
- Volunteers teach Wake County adults basic reading skills.
MEALS ON WHEELS
- Volunteers deliver meals on a regular basis to people who are homebound.
NEWTON GROVE MIGRANT MINISTRY
- Members support the work of the Diocese with migrant workers in various areas of need.
WAKE RELIEF
- Interfaith program based at Saint Saviour’s Center, providing emergency food supplies to individuals and families in Wake County.
SAINT SAVIOUR’S CENTER
- Originally an Episcopal school, the Center, located on Tucker Street, coordinates volunteer activities around service and support of the area’s elderly population, as well as other community-oriented outreach.
